What's the catch with these programs? Do I need to repay the money provided through Union SAFE grants?
There's no catch! If you qualify and your grant application is approved, you will receive grant money that you do not need to repay.
Union Privilege has allocated money to provide to union members during these tough financial times. These unique programs are from the only labor-backed organization that has developed these types of innovative programs to help union families get the support they need.
How will my personal information be used?
Your information will be used only to process your Union SAFE grant application(s). We value your privacy and will not share any information with anyone other than the few who need to view it for the purposes of reviewing your application.
Is sending my personal information through the website secure?
The Union Plus site uses encryption technology known as Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol to ensure that information you send online is kept secure. For more information, see the Union Plus privacy policy.
Why is certain documentation required to be mailed in with the Union SAFE grant applications?
The documentation is required in order for us to verify that you have met the requirements to receive the grant; the requirements were designed to provide benefits to union members with the most financial need. We require signatures and hard-copy documentation to validate information accuracy.
What is the AFL-CIO Mutual Benefits Trust?
The AFL-CIO Mutual Benefits Trust provides the financial backing for Union SAFE grant programs. The Trust is governed by an independent board of unpaid, retired union elected officials and it is administered by Union Privilege, the provider of Union Plus benefits and Union SAFE grants.
Can I apply for more than one grant type?
Yes. You may apply for different grants as long as you meet each grant's eligibility requirements.
Do I need to be a union member to apply for a Union SAFE grant?
Yes, you must be a union member or a union retiree. And, for most of the grants, you must also be a participant in one of the Union Plus programs. Please see each grant for specific information.
Can a spouse or other family member get a Union SAFE grant?
The union member must apply for the grant. However, the union member is eligible for many of the grants if the spouse or family member experiences the hardship AND is a joint cardholder or authorized user of a Union Plus credit card or a cosigner on a Union Plus mortgage loan. See each grant for specific information on requirements.
Can I apply more than one time?
You may apply more than one time, but you may receive each grant only one time per lifetime.
What is the deadline for applying?
The deadlines differ among the grants. Please see each grant for specific information.
How long will these grants be available?
Unemployment, disability and strike assistance is available for the life of the Union Plus Mortgage program. All other Union SAFE grants are available until December 31, 2009.

If you do not have internet access at home, we recommend going to a friend's house or visiting your nearest public library to download and print grant application forms.
